permanent art at the lot at the Wolfensberger and Wilcox intersection due to
several concerns, including the eventual plan to use the lot for street
improvements, the lack of availability of safe parking to view public art, and existing
testing wells that require access on the lot. The Town Manager is also concerned
over the public getting attached to art that may require removal in the future when
transportation improvements are needed.
Chair Jen Perry asked the group if the proposal Big Drive is strong enough to keep
as a priority and fundraise towards, assuming the commission could seek
approval to place the sculpture at a different location. Ken Greenberg expressed
interest in finding an alternate location and highlighted the importance of the
proposal having the potential to serve as a tourist attraction and still welcome
visitors to Castle Rock. Dana Frazee and Inger Hiller also expressed interest in
continuing with the project. Jen then suggested the creation of a subcommittee to
continue to research alternate locations throughout October to present a project
summary in November; Ken and Inger offered to serve on the subcommittee.
Katie Gasper suggested researching more temporary beautification solutions for
placement at the lot, and Jen and Katie Gasper volunteered to form an additional
subcommittee to research alternate options to present to Dave for consideration in
the future. Temporary solutions could include artistic billboards or signs, fiberglass
molds, textile art or light art.
Staff also provided the update that they were coordinating with the Town Attorney's
Office to seek direction on next steps for the creation of the nonprofit organization,
the Castle Rock Arts and Culture Foundation.
To close the discussion, staff reviewed upcoming priorities scheduled for
November, including brainstorming enhancement solutions for And The Wheels
Go Round behind Town Hall, social media and email communication planning, and
scheduling and inviting speakers to attend meetings and provide updates
throughout 2025.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
Dana Frazee invited the group to the Tri Art's Project Second Annual Art of Giving
Gala, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8.
Katie Klossner expressed that she had visited and toured the art gallery located at
Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and noted that curator Mary Williams had displayed
a variety of student art from Douglas County High School. Katie suggested
reaching out on future projects for cross promotion, especially since the
commission is getting more involvement from students through the Holiday Card
Art Contest and the Tiny Art Quest. Julisa Morris suggested inviting Mary Williams
to a future meeting to talk about the art featured at the hospital.
