PUBLIC COMMENT
Caryn Johnson, representing the Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum,
addressed the commission regarding a previously submitted Art and Culture Grant
application that was not awarded due to the program prioritizing shovel-ready
projects. She noted that her board requested she attend a commission meeting to
better understand and confirm the grant review process and to assess readiness
for future applications. Caryn expressed interest in potential partnerships, including
use of the CAFÉ platform. Staff shared the upcoming grant timeline and
clarification was provided regarding a possible partnership with PAC, including use
of CAFÉ to post the call, involvement of a subcommittee for drafting the call,
reviewing submissions, jurying artwork, and addressing long-term art maintenance
related to a sculpture project. Caryn noted the Historical Society meets on the first
Friday of each month and that February's meeting would focus on this discussion.

Staff provided several updates to the commission, including receipt of a new
public art commission application to help fill the current vacancy. The winner of the
Holiday Card Art Contest was recognized at the December 2 Town Council
meeting, and staff reflected on lessons learned regarding earlier distribution of
cards for sale and maintaining a non-denominational approach. Members were
encouraged to come prepared in January for 2025-2026 planning. It was also
shared that Jay, Director of Castle Rock's Arapahoe Community College, would
attend the January 2026 meeting to discuss a potential mural partnership. Lastly,
staff confirmed that the artist accepted the purchase price of $18,700 for the “High
Five!” sculpture, currently on display in Castle Rock through Art Encounters.
