class at Douglas County High School. The students had been photographing the
town’s public art collection, and the donation served as a formal thank you for their
contributions. KC Neel made the motion to approve the donation letter, which was
seconded by Dana Frazee, and the motion passed unanimously. Staff would
move forward with executing the donation, and the photos were expected to be
returned soon.
The commission reviewed submissions for the Town’s official holiday card and
selected a finalist. The winning artwork, titled “Winter Nights of Castle Rock,” was
a colored pencil drawing created by Kamryn Brecheisen, an 8th-grade student at
Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning. She would receive a $100 gift card,
a set of her own cards and recognition at an upcoming Town Council meeting.
The cards would also be placed for sale at the Town's recreation facilities.
The commission reviewed a draft call for artwork for banner art at the Encore
Parking Garage in Downtown Castle Rock. The call for artists was set to be
posted in October, with the goal of reviewing final submissions in November and
installing the new artwork in early January. The banners would celebrate Castle
Rock’s local history and the broader sesquisemiquincentennial, marking
Colorado’s 150th and America’s 250th birthdays. During discussion, Colleen
Andrus asked for clarification about whether multiple artists or one cohesive
design would be sought for the banners. She also raised a question regarding
original art and the acceptance of AI-generated submissions. After discussion, it
was decided that the application form would include a section allowing artists to
disclose their mediums, including the use of AI or digital tools such as Photoshop.
This addition would help the commission assess originality and medium type while
keeping the language on the banner submission guidelines clear and balanced.
"I move to approve the donation letter as presented for the Douglas County High
School's AP Photography class and to honor the hard work and efforts of the
students in photographing the Town's public art collection."
