Executive Summary

The Castle Rock Public Art Commission Public Art Plan (Attachment A) was approved by Town Council in October 2017 and identified six goals:

Goal 1: Continue to participate in Douglas County Art Encounters and expand programming.

Goal 2: Develop a rigorous art selection process for all public art projects.

Goal 3: Create pedestrian-scale art experiences downtown that add vitality and encourage people to walk around.

Goal 4: Commission a new public art project at Philip S. Miller Park to deepen the visitor experience.

Goal 5: Increase understanding and promotion of the public art program by achieving outreach projects.

Goal 6: Take care of the public art collection by developing a maintenance and conservation policy.

The Public Art Commission completed the plan through consultant Art Management and Planning Associates, Inc. at a cost of $6,945. AMPA developed project strategy, gathered information, gathered community input, analyzed the data, identified alternatives, synthesized findings, compiled final recommendations and wrote the final plan. Using the Public Art Commission’s annual budget as a baseline, AMPA assisted with the establishment of public art strategic priorities for 2017 through 2021.

At its April meeting, Commission members directed staff to add this item to its May agenda to initiate planning discussions for the next Public Art Plan. In May, members briefly reviewed a schedule of planning the next plan and determined to continue these efforts in June.
