Executive Summary

The Public Art Commission Subcommittee will provide an update on the planning efforts of the Painting Positivity Campaign. The subgroups of the Public Art Commission and Castle Rock Artist Cooperative continued discussions, focusing on the project’s first phase, which will be the commissioning and production of two murals in Downtown Castle Rock.

Since both groups were in agreement on launching the project with a mural, it was determined that the subcommittee would begin collaboration on a call for entries. Meeting attendees decided to prioritize solidifying the Fort CPA Group’s wall at 407 Wilcox Street, as well as the stairway along Sellars Gulch Trail near Festival Park as final locations, as there was concern expressed over the historic nature of the brick wall at Bogey’s West north of Third Street.

A draft Call for Entries has been attached for the Commission’s review and feedback (Attachment A). Two calls will be created specific to each respective mural location. The calls will be distributed to a variety of sites, as well as through social media and potentially through press.

To plan for future meetings and phases and better distribute priorities, the subgroup delegated responsibilities to individuals and small groups. Responsibilities include: project management, securing partners, communicating with site owners, coordinating installation logistics, creating an art jurying process, government liaison, communicating with artist, tracking the project budget, directing communication and outreach efforts, creating maintenance standards for murals, grant reporting and school outreach.

The subgroups also agreed to host regular meetings the last Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.
