Title
Subcommittee Update on Downtown Art Project
Body
________________________________________________________________________________
Executive Summary
On August 21, Public Art Commission Subcommittee members discussed art selection options to accomplish goal three of the Public Art Plan, which is to create pedestrian-scale art experiences in Downtown Castle Rock.
After assessing various options for art in downtown - such as electrical box wraps, murals and positive messaging campaigns - it was determined the subcommittee should meet with staff of the Downtown Alliance to initiate next steps in project planning.
On September 8, the subcommittee met with staff of the Downtown Alliance and presented several project options including: wrapping the bathroom facility at Festival Park and wrapping traffic signal boxes radiating from the park to connect a general story or theme; creating a mural or series of murals; and, promoting a positive message campaign, which could be completed in addition to or as part of either of the project options previously listed. Staff of the Downtown Alliance were excited for the opportunity to assist with any of the projects and all expressed interest in the positive messaging campaign. It was noted that the subcommittee would reach out to schedule future meetings with Downtown Alliance staff once project details are more solidified.
In Attachment A, the Commission may review the subcommittee’s general proposal and rough schedule for selecting downtown art.
As a side note, Jen Perry also provided the Downtown Alliance with the update that the Commission hopes to soon issue a survey to gauge and assess the public’s interest and perception of art in Castle Rock. Kevin Tilson of the Downtown Alliance invited the Commission to present the survey at their next board meeting on October 1. Their staff noted they would be more than willing to help distribute the survey and encourage engagement.
