Executive Summary

For over a decade, the Town has participated in Art Encounters. This program provides rotating art exhibits to the residents of Douglas County in various media and styles. Displayed in highly visible areas in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Parker and Roxborough, new art pieces are installed each year to promote public interest in art, develop community pride, foster community character and draw visitors to retail and civic areas.

2019-2020 Art Encounters updates:

At its January meeting, the Public Art Commission considered relocating TWL #1 due to Encore Construction.

The sculpture was moved to Triangle Park as no spot in Town Hall could be provided that allowed for public access.

Local artist Mary Williams was the 2019-2020 judge for the program’s Judge’s Choice Award. She selected Epiphany in Highlands Ranch as the winner:

After reviewing all 26 sculptures in the five locations, I choose “Epiphany” by Jacob Novinger, for the Judge’s Choice Award.  Epiphany spoke to me on many levels. The abstract composition of a horse is a nice departure from realism and sparks one’s imagination. Epiphany demands attention, with its head held upward displaying confidence and strength. The various steel materials give the sculpture texture and add dimension. The quality of craftsmanship is top notch. Lastly, I’m a sucker for color and honestly who doesn’t love a blue horse!

2020-2021 Art Encounters updates:

A call for entries was posted to ArtCall.org and will remain open through Friday, Feb. 21. The deadline may be extended, as it has been in years past, to allow for additional entries if necessary.

If the Call for Entries ends on Friday, Feb. 21, the selection meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. This means the Commission will likely need to call and approve a special meeting for Tuesday, Feb. 25 to consider entry choices for the 2020-2021 program year. This meeting could replace or be held in addition to the March meeting, pending motion approval.

Lastly, because the appointed Commission representative for Art Encounters has resigned from the Commission, a new representative should be appointed to attend the selection meeting.
