Tree of Wings Project Update
Body
________________________________________________________________________________
Executive Summary
In 2018, the Public Art Commission approved the selection of artists Mary Williams and John King for the public art project at Philip S. Miller Park. The artists will design, fabricate, finish, deliver and install an original kinetic sculpture in 2019, Tree of Wings.
Since the artists’ contract was executed and approved by Town Council, Mary Williams and John King have provided renderings for the piece, a project schedule and a proposed location. Due to discrepancies between the original rendering and the sculpture in the proposed location rendering, at its July meeting, the Commission directed staff to confirm the project’s details with the artists, specifically in regards to the design and coloring of the trunk. Staff have since confirmed that the rendering in Attachment A is the rendering the artists are operating with. Mary and John further explained that the image of the sculpture in the proposed location rendering was intended to show location and not sculptural details.
The artists have further explicated that after roughly two-thirds of production is complete, they would then prefer to have the Commission visit the studio in Lyons to view the piece and determine colors. The artists have proposed meeting on Thursday, September 26 around 1 pm. If this date is approved, the Commission will need to motion to call to hold a special meeting. The Commission may or may not decide to still hold its regularly scheduled meeting on September 12.
Budget Impact
In its entirety, this project will cost $50,000. Art commissioned by the Town of Castle Rock is funded through the Philip S. Miller Trust Fund not through taxpayer dollars.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommend that Commissioners discuss the proposed studio visit date and call a special meeting as appropriate. Staff also recommend that Commissioners consider whether or not to hold the regularly scheduled September meeting.
