Title
Discussion/Direction: Preferred Pieces for the 2019-2020 Art Encounters Program
Body

Executive Summary
Douglas County Art Encounters is a Countywide year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit. A Public Art Advisory Committee, with representatives from each participating jurisdiction, selects the artwork from applications submitted for the program. Commissioner Volp is this Commission’s representative on the Advisory Committee.
On Friday, Feb. 15, Program Coordinator Kim Smith did send notification to participating jurisdictions that only 30 artists submitted sculptures with 52 submissions. Due to the low applicant numbers, Smith decided to extend the program’s submission deadline to this Friday, Feb. 22. Additional submissions may be received after this meeting.
The Art Encounters Advisory Committee is expected to conduct its round robin selection process on February 27, 2019. After that time, Staff Member Aman will work with the selected artists to secure pieces for placement in Castle Rock for the 2019-2020 Art Encounters season. In 2018-2019, the Town displayed six pieces through the program.
Financial Information
The Town pays an $800 stipend to each artist whose work is displayed in Castle Rock through Art Encounters; $4,800 was budgeted for six stipends in 2019. Additional funding for judging and awards and plaques may be required; in 2018, $750 was spent on these items. If selected sites are not already prepared for pieces, installation costs may also apply.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Commission consider the eligible pieces and prioritize them for placement within Castle Rock.
Proposed Motion
Recommended Action
