Executive Summary

Staff would like to update the Commission regarding the following items.

Sweet Tooth

Since the occurrence of the November Public Art Commission meeting, Parks and Open Space Supervisor, John Jorgensen, has secured the bronze bear sculpture, Sweet Tooth, and installed its respective plaque. Per the Commission’s direction earlier in 2018, Sweet Tooth was relocated to the northwest corner of 4th and Perry streets after its ownership was conveyed to the Town through the Downtown Development Authority.

Gathering of Local Arts Agencies (LAA) Leadership

Matt Chanasky, Manager of the Office of Arts and Culture at the City of Boulder Library and Arts, and Ginger White Brunetti, the Deputy Director of Arts and Venues for the City of Denver, extended an invitation to local art agencies to attend a meeting on Thursday, Dec. 6. Staff Liaison, Maia Aman, along with Commissioners Stephen Maruska and Susan Paulsen attended. Participants provided updates from the communities they represent, discussed the issues and opportunities facing Front Range art agencies and agreed to schedule quarterly meetings in the future. It is the impression of staff that the Gathering of Local Arts Agencies Leadership will provide a dynamic opportunity to learn from and collaborate with regional art partners. Future details regarding the meetings will be provided to the Public Art Commission as they become available.

New Council Liaison

Town Council members serve as liaisons on Town Boards and Commissions, as well as other organizations. The Public Art Commission has historically had three rotating liaisons. 2018 Public Art Commission liaison, Renee Valentine, was termed out and replaced by Caryn Johnson at the Dec. 4 Town Council meeting. With the election and new council appointments, it is the intent of Council to discuss liaison responsibilities at their Dec. 18 meeting. The Public Art Commission will soon have at least one new Council Liaison.

Future agenda items

Future agenda items could include inviting Bill LaFleur, staff of Parks and Recreation, to discuss the potential of carving a tree stump in Festival Park to create a public art piece; assessing the inventory of the Douglas County Art Encounters program to decide whether or not to purchase pieces for permanent installation; and, reviewing the Public Art Commission’s Public Art Plan to establish 2019 priorities.
