Executive Summary

Staff would like to update the Commission regarding the following items.

Cabinet wrap installation at Philip S. Miller Park

William Slater installed the artists plaques last week in four locations on the cabinets and the array, a picture can be referenced in Attachment A. This action marks the last step in the cabinet wrap project’s completion.

Sweet Tooth

The Downtown Alliance officially conveyed ownership of the sculpture, “Sweet Tooth,” to the Town at its September meeting. Staff are presently working to insure the sculpture prior to moving it to its new home at the northwest intersection of Fourth and Perry streets.

Existing art pieces

Unfortunately, on September 19, Parks Open Space Supervisor, John Jorgensen, discovered vandalized damage to Mr. Toolman. This sculpture is on a one-year loan as part of the Art Encounters Program at Metzler Ranch Community Park. Artist Justin Deister graciously agreed to fix the damage free-of-charge. A police report was filed and can be referenced in Attachment B.

Mr. Jorgensen also noticed that the backlit lighting was out on a wing of Stainless Wings II (not due to vandalism) at Butterfield Crossing Park. This piece is also on a one-year loan as part of the Art Encounters Program. Artist Joe Norman was notified and stated he will soon visit the piece to assess the problem and fix it. Mr. Norman’s email can be referenced in Attachment C.

Lastly, the art frame located near the Castle Rock Recreation Center has several missing components and worn paint. Many of the frame’s initial pottery pieces have chipped away, as can be seen in before and after photographs in Attachment D. This piece was commissioned in 2012 to artists Irene Tayor, Judy Pollock and Cloyd Snook; little else is known about its history. In addition, while the Castle Rock Public Art Commission Public Art Plan contains a goal to implement an art maintenance, conservation and restoration policy, such document does not presently exists.

Douglas County Art Encounters meeting

Town staff Kristin Zagurski and Maia Aman attended an Art Encounters meeting on September 19. A summary of the discussion can be read in Attachment E. Call for entries for the 2019-2020 program year will be accepted from Wednesday, January 2 through Friday, February 15. At the next meeting on Wednesday, February 27, program participants will begin the selection process.
