Proclamation:  Cornerstone Tribute to Frank Daniel “Dan” Burgess

Body

Background and Outline of the Program

In 2007, Town Council approved the creation of the Cornerstone Tribute to give public recognition to individuals and organizations that help the Town reach the goals of the four Cornerstones established as part of the Vision 2020 Statement:  Town Identify, Community Planning, Community Services and Local Economy (Resolution 2007-138 - Attachment C).

Nominations are submitted to the Town Clerk; and a panel, chaired by the Mayor, reviews the nominations to determine if the nominee meets at least one of the Cornerstones.  The panel is made up of residents from the areas of Education, Business, Youth and a Resident-at-Large.

If the nomination is approved, they are to be recognized with a formal Proclamation presented during a Town Council meeting, and a permanent Cornerstone Tribute sign will be placed along the walking trail through Festival Park.

Nomination for the Cornerstone Tribute

The Castle Rock Parks and Recreation department submitted a nomination for Frank Daniel “Dan” Burgess.  Dan has a long list of contributions that he made to the Town of Castle Rock demonstrating three of the four Cornerstones.  (Attachment B). In summary, he graduated from Douglas County High School, raised his family in Castle Rock and owned Burgess Motor Company on Wilcox.  He was a member and president of the Chamber of Commerce, raised funds to build Burgess Pool in honor of his uncle, served and was Chief on the Volunteer Fire department, and served on Town Council.  Dan was also a coach and sponsor of youth teams, announcer at DCHS football games and was a bus driver.

Panel Review and Recommendation

A panel was made up of four individuals:  Business Owner Dr. Kathy Kinch, Teacher at Meadowview Shanequa Baker, Resident Beth Miller, and Student at Douglas County High School Hanna Saunder.  The Mayor and Town Clerk met with the panel on August 16, 2018; and it was unanimously agreed to award Dan Burgess the Cornerstone Tribute.

The Mayor would like to present the family with a Proclamation recognizing Dan for his service to the community and recipient of the Cornerstone Tribute (Attachment A).

A ceremony for the installation of the sign is planned for October 2018.
