Discussion
Staff would like to update the Commission on a few items:
Cabinet wrap installation
The prints for the electrical boxes near the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park were sent to production. Attached are photographs of a sample of the wrap prior to installation and of the project’s partial installation. William Slater of the Public Art Collective was pleased with result of the canvas and brush stroke texture on the product.
Installation of the wraps began on Monday, Aug. 6. During the wrapping process, the installer noticed a discrepancy between the electrical box layout of the original art design and the present-day electrical box layout. Park Planning and Construction Manager Brian Peterson did confirm that additional electric was installed since the project’s design was set in place. Due to the addition, a small electrical box was moved to the end of the panel row and a larger panel was installed in its place. The new panel is roughly four times larger. The additional wrap will add an estimated $1,600 to the project cost and the Parks and Recreation Department has agreed to cover this cost due to the change in the paneling layout. The Public Art Collective extended the existing design to cover the larger-sized box and expedited wrap production for the installer. The project is still on schedule to be completed by Aug. 10.
In addition, staff recommends that the Commission consider and discuss the types of public outreach it would like to implement to communicate this new project to the community.
Bear statute
Staff followed up with Downtown Alliance staff with regard to “Sweet Tooth,” the bronze bear presently located near Mountain Man at Fourth and Perry. The Alliance intends to convey ownership of the sculpture to the Commission at its September meeting, if the Commission so desires. Following that conveyance, staff stands ready to facilitate moving the sculpture per the Commission’s direction.
Commissioner Lauri Maloney researched potential future locations for the bronze bear. Pictures of Sweet Tooth and possible locations are identified in Attachment C. Staff will need to verify which sites are available for installation, depending on the location(s) recommended by the Commission, prior to proceeding.
Art podium near future roundabout
A roundabout is scheduled to be constructed at the intersection of Gilbert Street and Plum Creek Parkway in 2019. An art pedestal featuring sculpture Dancing Moon IV is currently installed northeast of this intersection in Baldwin Park. The widening required by roundabout construction may necessitate that the art pedestal and piece to be moved to a different location within the park or to another site. The Commission may wish to start thinking about where this sculpture might be placed if a move becomes necessary.
Future meeting locations
Moving forward, Public Art Commission meetings will be staffed by Parks and Recreation staff. Previously, the Commission has expressed desire to meet at the Miller Activity Complex. The Millhouse may also be available for meetings, depending on scheduling. Staff would like Commission feedback on where to host meetings moving forward.
