Update: Per Commission direction, staff developed the attached (Attachment D) draft open call for the Commission’s feedback. Staff recommends that the Commission discuss the draft and offer any further direction.
In April, the Commission continued discussion of a potential future project at Philip S. Miller Park. Parks and Recreation staff generated an idea listing in October 2016, which is attached for reference.
The Public Art Plan adopted in 2017 includes the goal: Commission a new public art project at Philip S. Miller Park to deepen the visitor experience. The plan recommends allocating $40,000 for this purpose. The plan further recommends working with Parks and Recreation to develop project criteria such as placement, scale and type of art.
The Commissioners said they would come to the May meeting with further ideas. Some Commissioners submitted ideas and other information via email prior to the meeting:
Commissioner Attardo

Financial Information
The 2018 budget for public art is $56,050. Art Encounters program expenses are expected to run about $5,000, leaving just over $50,000 in available funds. Additional initiatives identified for 2018 in the Public Art Plan are an assessment report ($5,500) and maintenance projects ($5,000).
