Executive Summary
The purpose of this item is to recommend that the week of May 18-24, 2025 be declared National Public Works Week by Town Council.
The American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public Works Week (NPWW) across North America since 1960. Usually observed each year during the third full week of May, NPWW is marked with resolutions and proclamations from mayors and governors across the nation. In each community, whatever its size, there are needs common to all that must be met through the provision of public works services.
There is no one, ideal structure for a public works organization. As such, here in Castle Rock the responsibility for water, sewer, and storm drain maintenance falls to the Water Department and maintenance and construction of parks, public tree trimming, planting, and maintenance of landscaping of medians falls to the Parks & Recreation Department. All these departments are part of the snow operations team. Additionally, the Town Manager’s Office ensures public facilities are taken care of. Together, these departments work side-by-side to help build our community by creating an excellent quality of life for all by imagining tomorrow today and turning dreams into reality. “Public works” services are recognized by this proclamation as a Town team, which coincides with the theme for 2025 “People, Purpose, Presence”.
We are recommending that Town Council present the attached Proclamation declaring May 18-24, 2025 as National Public Works Week.
