Executive Summary

The purpose is to approve the selection of the Teen Advisory Group (TAG) representative for the Parks and Recreation Commission.

The Teen Advisory Group meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month except during the summer months.  During their recent meeting, the Group decided on roles and responsibilities for the individual members including the TAG Commission representative.  In addition, TAG guidelines such as attendance policies, special event involvement, and community service projects were discussed. The Group is brainstorming and identifying teen events that they would like to participate in whether it’s organizing an event or volunteering.  TAG has done several community service projects this year including collecting food for the Douglas County Task Force, maintaining two community garden plots, maintaining their adoption of Matney Park through the POST Partners Volunteer Program, collecting for the holiday “giving tree”, adopting a tree through the Festival of Trees, volunteering at Tri the Rock, Spooktacular and Daddy Daughter Ball.

Discussion

The goal of the Teen Advisory Group is to act as a “voice” for the youth in Castle Rock.  Therefore, a TAG representative will serve as a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Josie Mekelburg is a 10th grader at Douglas County High School.  She is a second year active member of the Teen Advisory Group.  Josie plays both high school volleyball and club volleyball and also runs high school track.  She enjoys listening to music and spending time with friends.

Josie is a very hardworking student with college aspirations.  She thoroughly enjoys math, science and history and is in the honors program at Douglas County High School.

Josie is a very outgoing, energetic, fun loving and an all-around nice young lady that genuinely likes to help others.

Staff Recommendation

Staff recommends the endorsement of Josie Mekelburg as the TAG representative to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
