Castle Rock Water’s 2024 Sanitary Survey Results [Entire Castle Rock Water Service Area]

Executive Summary

Every three years, a sanitary survey is conducted of the Castle Rock Water (CRW) system by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Sanitary surveys ensure that the public water system’s operational, monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping practices are in compliance with drinking water regulations. They can also identify any significant deficiencies. During the four-day Sanitary Survey conducted on CRW’s system, CDPHE identified 13 items as significant deficiencies. CRW fixed 12 of the items within 24 hours of the survey completion. The final item, which required a change to the design of the chemical feed system for the Meadows Water Treatment Plant previously approved by CDPHE, was completed within approximately 30 days of the survey. While the items identified by CDPHE were minor (e.g. missing bolts in a well cap in CRW’s raw water system) and easily fixed, CRW has created an additional inspection checklist and process for our raw water wells (where most of the items were identified), identified additional training requirements for plant operators and plant maintenance, set up an annual internal Sanitary Survey process, and moved the Regulatory Division that performs internal Sanitary Surveys to report directly to the Director of CRW.

Budget Impact

There is no significant impact to the budget.  Additional work and processes will be handled by existing staff.
