Title
Wolfensberger Road Underpass Artwork Project Update
Body
________________________________________________________________________________
Executive Summary
The Public Art Commission previously reviewed a draft call for artwork for the Town-owned retaining walls near the Wolfensberger Road railroad underpass. The proposed project budget is $70,000, including the original $50,000 allocation and the Commission’s approved transfer of an additional $20,000 from the scholarship program.
During its review, the Commission supported describing the opportunity more broadly as an artwork project rather than limiting it to a traditional painted mural. This approach would allow artists to propose painted, sculptural, dimensional or other creative elements, subject to site limitations, engineering requirements, safety considerations and Town approval.
At its September meeting, the Commission discussed the condition and appearance of the roadway medians near the underpass and the potential benefit of coordinating median improvements with the artwork project. The Commission voted to postpone publication of the call until additional information regarding the overall project scope was available.
Staff continues to coordinate internally regarding potential median improvements, project timing and how any related improvements could be incorporated into the call for artists. Staff will provide the Commission with the most current information available at the meeting. Once internal direction has been confirmed, staff will update the draft call, project scope and anticipated schedule as needed before returning the item to the Commission.
