Executive Summary
Staff requests that a Proclamation (Attachment A) honoring the 35th Anniversary of the Douglas Land Conservancy be considered as an agenda item at the August 15, 2023 Town Council meeting. Mayor Jason Gray will read the proclamation to celebrate the decades-worth of efforts this nationally accredited, non-for-profit land trust has offered to local residents and regional partners to protect and conserve the natural character, habitats, ecosystems and open space of Douglas County and other areas along the Front Range region of Colorado.
Douglas Land Conservancy, or DLC, was formed in 1987 through a citizen initiative in response to regional growth rates that far outpaced the rest of the country. DLC works in partnership with land owners, local governments, other conservation organizations and citizens to evaluate, accept and monitor conservation easements. These easements protect large tracts of open space from development for perpetuity. In their 35-year history, Douglas Land Conservancy has protected over 26,000 acres in Douglas, Jefferson and Elbert counties. Castle Rock properties with easements protected by DLC include Woodlands Bowl, Quarry Mesa and Metzler Family open spaces.
