Title
Proclamation: National Public Works Week
Body
________________________________________________________________________________
Executive Summary
The purpose of this item is to recommend that the week of May 15-21, 2016 be declared National Public Works Week by Town Council.
The American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public Works Week (NPWW) across North American since 1960. Usually observed each year during the third full week of May, NPWW is marked with resolutions and proclamations from mayors and governors. In each community, whatever its size, there are needs common to all that must be met through the provision of public works services.
There is no one, ideal structure for a public works organization. As such, here in Castle Rock the responsibility for water, sewer, and storm drain maintenance falls to the Utilities Department and maintenance and construction of parks, public tree trimming, planting, and maintenance of landscaping of medians falls to the Parks & Recreation Department. All these departments are part of the snow operations team. Together, these departments work side-by-side to deliver “public works” services and are recognized by this proclamation as a Town team which coincides with the theme for 2016 “Public Works Always There”.
Mayor Paul Donahue will be presenting the Proclamation declaring May 15-21, 2016 as National Public Works Week.
Also, after a successful accreditation site visit by the American Public Works Association (APWA), the Public Works Department was awarded accreditation by the APWA Accreditation Council on March 15th. Dan Hartman, a Representative from the Accreditation Council, will present the APWA Accreditation plaque to Town Council.
