Executive Summary
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “the goal of the 2020 Census is to count everyone once, only once and in the right place.” Town staff has already begun working with the US Census Bureau on the 2020 Census. The U.S. Census occurs every ten years and will count everyone residing in the United States on April 1, 2020, “Census Day.” Attachment A includes Census 2020 frequently asked questions and answers as provided by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.
Discussion
The U.S. Constitution requires that the U.S. population be counted in order to determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives and to redraw federal and state legislative districts in addition to determining the fair allocation of federal dollars. In preparation for the 2020 Census, Town staff has been working with the U.S. Census Bureau and Douglas County by providing information updates, such as accurate boundary information and addresses within the Town that may have changed since the 2010 Census. Staff will continue this coordination until well after the 2020 Census count has been completed in early 2020. For more details on the 2020 Census timeline, please see Attachment B.
